Using Magick to Time the Publication of a Book

I am Margaret McNellis. I’m a published author, certified book coach, witch and graduate of The Magickal Path (WAY OF THE WITCH: Witchcraft 101 and 201). In this blog, which is reposted from my divination services website https://dashofmagick.com/, I talk about using magick to time the publication of a book by taking you through my own magickal process.

Of course, I use industry knowledge, too, such as knowing that for fiction, publishing between October and December means contending with traditional publishers during the holiday season. It’s not that an indie author like myself can’t sell books at that time. It’s just that it makes it all the more challenging.

While getting my book onto a bestseller list is not of primary importance, I have noted since publishing my first book, The Red Fletch, that Tuesdays are good days for publication (and why not? Mars energy is all about fire and passion and creativity.)

I also have to consider the work to be done on a book. Having a publication date helps me cope with my imposter syndrome, so I announce a date before the book is completely edited (though not before it’s written). This helps me stay on track with completing edits, proofreading, work with beta readers, and prep for publication stages (this is something I learned, in part, through magick).

For my next novel, OUTLAWED, this places me firmly in the July-September range… but how to pick a publication date from there?

Astrological Timing is the Basis for How I Time the Publication of a Book

When using magick to time the publication of a book, my first go-to is Llewellyn’s Daily Planetary Guide, in this case, for 2022. For my first book, I planned the release on a weekend because I wanted to have a debut launch party. I’m not planning an in-person party for book 2, which I felt freed me up to consider other days.

So I went with that old publishing standby, Tuesday. (After all, I like some Mars energy for this kind of event, anyway!) In the back of my head, though, I knew that if I didn’t find what I was looking for on a Tuesday, I could look to other days. Wednesdays and Fridays came to mind, since those are connected to Mercury and Venus, great energies for writers and sharing stories with the world.

I thumbed through the guide, and when I found out that on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, the moon will be waxing in Capricorn (my birth sign and good for ambition), I immediately took notice. It also happens that the moon is favorably positioned with key outer planets: Uranus (for independence), Neptune (for imagination), and Pluto (for material success). These planets are also in good signs:

• Uranus will be in Taurus, an earth sign that can bring grounding and beautification energies
• Neptune will be in Pisces, which is fantastic for creativity and imagination
• Pluto will be in Capricorn, which is great for me personally and also in another earth sign focused on ambition and success

The stars for Sept. 6, 2022 are, I would say, aligned.

Using Numerology to Double-Check Magickal Timing

I love numerology. It’s a place where I can thrive with numbers, which while I was good at math to a certain extent, I ultimately always felt like I struggled because it was my inability to understand higher-level math that changed my course in my undergraduate years. (I’m okay with it because I like the path I ended up walking, but it was a struggle for sure.) I like the simplicity—and at the same time, the complexity—of numerology.

So, I wanted to double check.

Now, my first book came out 9/18/2021, which had a numerological value of 5. This is great for change and felt appropriate for a first book. It also happened, for me, that this was a 3 day in a 3 month in a 3 year. The 3 is great for creativity and community.

For my second book, in looking at the date, we have 9/6/2022 with a numerological value of 3. For me personally, that date will be a 1 day in a 4 month in a 4 year. The 1 is great for innovation and leadership (leadership is a key theme of OUTLAWED). 4 is great for building foundations. My second indie-published novel is a nice way to say to the Universe, “I’m in this game and planning to keep building.” This, for me, is also a building year. It’s a master builder year at that because of the palindromic 22. It’s a good year to release a second novel and express that this path is not simply a whim. It’s a journey to which I’m devoted.

Final Thoughts About my Magickal Process

As a professional writer, industry and book knowledge take the front seat… but I like the idea of using magick to time the publication of a book. I like fine-tuning my release dates with magickal practices such as astrology and numerology. I also like casting spells to help the process by using the planets and astrological timing. As I get closer to the publication of this book, I will also draw tarot and oracle cards, consult my pendulum, and continue to work magick to help my book be easier to find for my ideal readers.

I couldn’t have gotten to this point without my training from The Magickal Path School, where I learned not only how to craft my own magickal practice, but also how to work with planetary energies. I now understand what’s happening in the skies, and how those alignments affect the mundane world.
